Why does nobody talk about knee kickers slipping on a 15 year old pad

Had a rough one in Rochester last Tuesday when my knee kicker kept sliding off the tack strip because the pad underneath was so worn it felt like wax paper. I got maybe 8 feet before the thing popped loose and I ate it right into a fresh seam, which of course meant pulling half the room back up. Ended up running a strip of blue tape along the edge just to get some grip and finishing the job at a snail's pace. Has anyone found a pad or a trick that keeps this from happening on old subfloor, or do I just need to replace my kicker head?
