A guy in a Discord chat said my cat memes had too much text, and I argued for a day before I got it
His exact words were "I can't read all that on a phone screen, my guy," and honestly my first reaction was to defend myself. I had been slapping 12 to 15 words of caption on every meme (stuff like long backstory lines over a blurry photo of my tabby Gus) and telling myself it made them funnier. So I went back and looked at my top posts on here and the ones at the bottom, and the pattern was pretty brutal. The three memes with 16,000 plus views all had four words or less on them. The ones where I wrote a paragraph over a cat face were all sitting in the low hundreds. So I started cropping in tighter on the cat and cutting the caption down to a punchline, or just letting the face do the whole joke with zero text. My stuff does way better now and I actually spend less time on each one. The hard part is deciding which half of my genius caption to throw away. Do you all have a word limit you stick to, or is it more about how funny the picture is on its own?
