Dropped $40 on a laser pointer for my cat memes and it backfired hard

I bought a $40 laser pointer setup in March to get action shots of my cat for memes, and it worked for about two days. Now he just stares at the wall where the dot used to show up and yells at 3am, and I can't get a single usable frame because he moves too fast. Found a tip from a guy in Tucson who said to use a phone tripod and a $6 feather wand instead, way better lighting on the face. Anyone else deal with a cat that got weird after too much laser time? Wondering if I should just go back to catching him mid yawn.
