A cook at a diner in Bakersfield slid me a free plate when I asked what the $5 special was
Stopped at a little spot off Highway 99 last month with $8 in my pocket and asked the cook what the cheapest thing on the menu was. He said the daily special was $5 but it was almost closing time, so he piled on extra potatoes and handed it over without charging me for the coffee. That plate of eggs, hash browns, and toast fed me for the rest of the drive and he just waved me off when I tried to tip. I've been back twice since and he always throws in something extra if it's near the end of his shift. Anyone else got a spot where the staff just hooks you up if you show up late?
