I swore off gas station roller dogs for 3 years until a trucker in Bakersfield changed my mind
I used to think gas station food was a scam after getting a $4 hot dog that tasted like it sat under that heat lamp since the Clinton administration, so I stuck to grabbing bananas and jerky on road trips. Last month I was filling up outside Bakersfield at 6am and a trucker saw me eyeing the roller grill and said 'get there before 7, that's when they swap them out, the ones sitting since last night are the sad ones.' I tried it and paid $2.50 for a dog that was actually hot and fresh, so now I'm wondering if there's a secret timing window at other chains or if this was a fluke.

Wait, they only swap them once a day at 7am?! I always figured those things got rotated way more often than that. That means anything I ever bought after noon was basically a leftover from breakfast.
