Serious question, does anyone else's $5 lunch spot charge more if you get it to go?
So I've been hitting this little taco window near my place in Phoenix for like two years now. It was always $5 for three tacos, cash only, no big deal. But I went today and the lady at the window goes, that'll be $7 if you want it in a box. I was like wait what? She said the sit down price is still $5 but the to go containers cost extra now. I stood there for a second and honestly I couldn't even be mad because it kinda makes sense, those styrofoam boxes aren't free and they probably lose money on the to go orders. But now I'm wondering how many of my other cheap spots are doing this same thing without telling me. I mean I get it, stuff costs more, but $2 extra for a box feels like a lot when the whole meal is $5. Has anyone else run into this where the to go price is way higher than eating there?
Honestly the math on that doesn't quite add up the way you're thinking. A styrofoam clamshell costs a restaurant maybe 10 to 15 cents each, not two bucks, so the box isn't really the reason for the upcharge. What's way more likely is she's charging you for the extra time and labor of packing it up, plus a lot of spots tack on fees for to go because those orders don't come with the expectation of a tip the way sitting down does. Still stings when it's almost half the price of the food though, so I'd just eat it there next time out of spite.
