The $2 tamale lady outside the Piggly Wiggly in Greenwood taught me more about lunch than any app
There's a woman who sets up a cooler outside the Piggly Wiggly on Howard Street in Greenwood, Mississippi, most mornings around 11. I walked past her for probably six months, figuring it was just another thing I didn't need to spend money on. One Tuesday the line at the Subway inside was 12 people deep, so I gave up and handed her $2 for two tamales wrapped in foil. She looked at me and said, "You going to eat those at your desk cold? That's a shame." She pulled a third one hot from the cooler bottom and told me the ones on top were for the evening crowd and I should always ask for the bottom of the cooler. That $2 got me more food than the $9 combo I was about to buy, and it actually tasted like somebody's grandma made it that morning. Now I look for the cooler people before I look for a drive thru. Anybody else got a parking lot or truck bed spot in their town that beats the chains on price?
