The $5.99 lunch special at the taqueria near me doubled in price the second I paid with a card
I eat at this little taqueria on 5th street about 3 times a week, and I always paid cash because the sign out front says 5.99 for the lunch special. A couple days ago I was short on cash so I tapped my card, and the total came out to 9.47. I asked the guy at the counter and he pointed to a tiny paper sign taped to the register that says card pays a 3.5% fee plus tax. Three and a half percent on a 6 dollar plate is like 20 cents, not 3.48. Turns out they round up the special to 8.99 for card orders and I never noticed because I always paid cash. I've been handing my card over at other spots too without looking, and now I'm sitting here adding up how many times I got quietly charged more for the same food. Ask for the card price before you order, or check if there's a different menu for cash, because it's not always posted where you can see it. Has anyone else run into a cash versus card price gap this big at a regular spot?
