My thermostat was set to 'hold' for 3 years and I never questioned it

When I finally ran the numbers on my energy bill from Denver last March, it hit me that I'd been paying to heat an empty apartment from 9 to 5 every weekday, and my programmable schedule had been sitting unused since I moved in, so has anyone else found their settings just defaulting to 'hold' without noticing?
