The number that got me was 3.5 percent, from a library book about home energy
I picked up a used copy of a home energy book at the library sale in Boise last Saturday and a chart in chapter 2 floored me. It said heating and cooling is something like half of what a normal US home uses, and a huge chunk of that just leaks out through gaps you can't see. So the next morning I walked around my place with a $12 tube of caulk and a foam strip I had sitting in the garage. I hit the gaps under both doors, the hole where the old dryer vent used to be, and the rim joist in the basement that I never once looked at in 4 years of living here. My furnace ran 22 minutes that night versus the usual 40 on a cold night, and I could feel the difference standing near the front door. It is wild that the cheap boring fix beat every gadget I ever thought about buying. What spots did you find first when you did this, and did any of them surprise you?
