A lead guy said my feeds and speeds were 'guessing with extra steps', so I started keeping a real log book
I've been running a Haas VF-2 at a shop in Dayton for about 3 years and I always just punched in numbers that felt right, same as the guy who trained me. Last month our lead hand watched me set up a 6061 job and flat out said 'you're guessing with extra steps', then made me write down every speed, feed, and depth of cut for a full week. Turns out I was running my 1/2 inch end mill about 30 percent slower than the book called for, and my cycle time on that part dropped from 11 minutes to 7 once I bumped it up. The weird part is the tool life didn't get worse, if anything the finish looked better. Do any of you keep a paper log anymore or is it all in an app now?
