Old school tool offsets vs. today's presetters, I miss the feel

Last week I watched a kid on a new Haas just trust the presetter numbers and run, and it hit me that back in 2017 I was touching off with a .001 shim and a prayer in that shop outside Columbus. Anyone else think we lost something when we stopped double checking with a manual cut every single time?

...and that's exactly what my buddy Dave learned the hard way. He trusted a brand new presetter on a lathe, skipped the manual check, and ended up scrapping a whole batch of parts because the tool holder had a bit of grit under it. We still give him crap about it, but honestly, that extra thirty seconds of double checking saved his ass more times than any fancy machine ever did.
