Tried building a to-do app as my first project and ended up with 400 lines of unreadable code

I followed a YouTube tutorial for a simple to-do list app in Python, and it worked on the first run, which honestly felt too easy. But then I tried adding one feature, a due date field, and broke the entire thing for about two days before realizing I had named two variables almost the same. How do you all keep track of your variable names when things start growing?
