Changed my mind on surface supplied vs scuba for shallow harbor work after last Tuesday
I used to be all about scuba for anything under 40 feet, figured a hat was overkill for quick jobs. Last Tuesday we were doing a pier inspection in Baltimore harbor, dirty water, maybe 18 inches of viz, and my buddy was on scuba while I ran surface supplied. He got his hose snagged on a barnacle covered piling and burned through his safety margin fast, while I just sat there with unlimited air and talked to the tenders on the comms. We pulled him up fine but it was close, 8 minutes of panic breathing off a 30 minute reserve. After seeing how calm things stayed on the hat side, I'm never running a working dive in that kind of muck without surface supply again. Any of you still run scuba for shallow commercial stuff or is everyone on hats now?
