A supply house counter guy in Tulsa told me to stop using thread tape on gas, and I still think he was wrong
I was picking up fittings at a supply house in Tulsa last Tuesday and mentioned I tape all my gas threads out of habit, and the counter guy cut me off and said pipe dope only, no tape. I pushed back because I have taped gas threads for 12 years on small commercial jobs without one callback or leak test failure. He just shook his head and said tape shreds into the line and clogs orifices, but I have never once pulled tape out of a regulator. Maybe I am stubborn, but I think blanket rules like that cause more confusion than they fix. Anyone here actually had tape cause a real problem on a gas job, or is this just old shop lore?
