Caught a rooftop unit dumping condensate into the vent stack last Wednesday
I was doing a routine walkthrough on a 4 story office building in Columbus and heard water running in a bathroom wall where nothing should be running. Pulled the ceiling tile and traced it up to a 3 inch condensate line from the rooftop AC unit that someone had tied into the 2 inch vent stack. That thing had been dumping for months, slowly filling the pipe and making every flush on the top floor gurgle like crazy. Took me about 2 hours to reroute it to a proper floor drain with a trap and an air gap. Has anyone else seen HVAC crews do this kind of tie-in on their sites?

Check the building's fire ratings before celebrating that fix, because a condensate line tied into a vent stack can compromise the fire stopping around that pipe penetration. I've seen inspectors flag those setups as code violations that cost way more than the quick reroute you just did. That gurgling was probably the least dangerous thing lurking in that wall.
