I finally figured out why my bench kept shocking me, and it was the chair
Last week I was at a client's office in Beaverton replacing a failing switch, and every time I stood up from their old steel-frame chair I got a little zap off the rack. I figured it was just dry air until I touched the chair and my screwdriver at the same time and got a real jolt. Turned out the chair was sitting on a 20 year old carpet tile and building up static, and the rack was the nearest ground. I moved the chair about 4 feet away and the zaps stopped completely. Now I keep a cheap anti-static mat in the van and toss it under any chair near a rack before I start pulling gear. Has anyone else been getting bitten by office furniture instead of the hardware?
