Level rod sank in wet mud, now I strap a small plate to the base

Last Friday I was shooting grades on a driveway pour near Tulsa and set my level rod down for one second to grab my radio. When I picked it back up, the bottom had sunk a full half inch into the saturated fill, and I shot the entire first section before I noticed. The finished slope came out low by almost a quarter inch over the run, and the homeowner caught it with a 4 foot level. I ended up grinding the high spots and patching, but now I bolt a 6 inch aluminum plate to the rod base so it floats on soft ground. Has anyone else rigged something like this for muddy slab work, or do you just kick a solid spot before every shot?

Yep, done that with a piece of plywood and duct tape. Works fine.
