Found a box of my great aunt's recipes at a farm auction in Beatrice and the margin notes changed how I cook
Ngl I almost skipped the auction because it was raining and the drive to Beatrice took 2 hours, but the box cost me $4 and it was full of index cards from the 1950s. What got me was the notes in the margins, stuff like 'double the butter if company' and 'oven runs hot, watch it.' It hit me that all these cozy old kitchens people try to copy online were just people writing down what actually worked, grease stains and all. I've started doing the same thing on my own cards now and it makes my kitchen feel less like a photo and more like a place someone really lives. Has anyone else found old family recipe cards, and do you actually cook from them or just keep them?
