My sourdough starter died on day 12 and I almost gave up on bread forever
I killed my first sourdough starter last Tuesday after spending 12 days feeding it like a baby. It turned pink and smelled like nail polish remover, which I learned means it caught some bad bacteria from my kitchen sponge. I dumped the whole jar and cried a little, then drove to the farm store in Georgetown and bought a $6 bag of rye flour. Started a new one that same night and now on day 4 it is bubbling like crazy, so maybe the sponge was the problem all along. Has anyone else had a starter go bad and did you figure out what caused it?
Did you sterilize your jar before you started the new one? Tbh mine kept going bad until I started washing everything with boiling water and stopped using the same sponge for dishes and starter stuff.
