Guy on my rig in Houston told me he never takes a pick over 80% capacity and I can't decide if he's smart or slow
I was paired with a hand from the Houston yard on a 3 week job last spring and on the second day he turned down a pick that I know would've gone easy. I asked him why and he said "I only take it to 80, the last 20 is for God." At first I thought he was just being careful to a fault, but then he told me about a load chart he got burned on back in 2019 where the math said fine and the ground said no. We sat on that for a bit and it got me wondering how many of my picks over the years have been closer to the line than I want to admit. He wasn't saying to baby the machine, he was saying leave yourself room for the stuff you can't see, like soft dirt or a gust or a load that shifts. I've been running 15 years and I still don't know if I fully buy the 80 rule for every single pick. What's the margin y'all actually run with, or do you just go by the chart and feel?
