Just realized I wasted 5 weeks chasing a hydraulic leak on my Liebherr, and it was a 60 cent O-ring the whole time
So I had this slow weep on the boom cylinder of our 130 ton machine at a job site out in Bakersfield, and it kept leaving a little puddle on the outrigger pad every morning. I figured it was a seal going bad in the cylinder itself, so we pulled the whole thing apart out in the yard, which took two guys almost three days and a rented crane to lift the rod out. Put it all back together with a new seal kit, ran it for a shift, and the leak came right back, same spot. Then I started checking every fitting and hose on that circuit, replaced two hoses I did not need to, and finally my old timer mechanic buddy swings by, looks at it for maybe 30 seconds, and points at the O-ring on the counterbalance valve. It was flattened out and hard as a rock. Swapped it in about 10 minutes and the weeping stopped for good. I keep that old O-ring in my toolbox now just to remind myself to check the cheap stuff before I tear down a cylinder. Anybody else ever burn a ton of time on the little stuff because your brain jumped straight to the worst case?
