Saw a guy almost lose a load in a parking lot in Gary last week, here's what I noticed
I was set up in a lot off Grant Street in Gary, Indiana last Tuesday doing some steel picks, and this other operator was running a boom truck maybe 30 feet from me. He was lifting a bundle of rebar and I watched his outrigger float pad sink into soft ground on one corner. The whole truck started to lean, maybe 2 or 3 degrees, and he just kept on going like nothing was wrong. I killed my load and walked over there, told him to set it down and check his pads. Turns out a pipe had busted under that gravel a while back and nobody knew the ground was soup down there. We ended up cutting plywood to 4 foot squares and doubling up the pads before he could keep going. Could have laid that whole truck over with the boom out if the ground gave any more. Has anyone else run into hidden soft spots in lots that look fine from the cab?
