Talked to an old tower crane hand last week that changed how I prep for high wind days

I ran into a retired operator named Frank at a job site in Pittsburgh. He told me he always kept a 50 foot section of nylon rope in his cab tied off to the mast. Said it saved him once when his radio died and he had to signal a ground guy by yanking the rope in patterns. I never thought about having a backup that doesn't need batteries. Made me realize I rely way too much on electronics for communication up there. Anyone else carry something simple like that in their cab just in case?

Used to roll my eyes at old school stuff like that but Frank makes a really good point. A dead radio would leave you totally isolated up there.

Nylon rope sounds like just another thing to trip over in a cramped cab.
