Appreciation post: my old roommate's rule about not washing the skillet is the only reason we never fought
Everyone on here loves to post about the roommate who leaves dishes for 3 weeks or stacks pizza boxes like Jenga, and I get it, that stuff is funny. But I lived with a guy named Devin in a two bedroom in Boise for 18 months and we never had one single blow up about the kitchen. The reason was one rule he set on day one: the cast iron skillet does not go in the sink, ever, and whoever cooks is the only one who touches it. At the time I thought it was a little much, honestly it felt like a weird hill to stand on. But looking back, that one small thing took away the whole argument, because nobody was ever guessing whose turn it was or whether the pan was ruined. Devin moved out a year ago and I still follow the rule with my own skillet, and I've had two roommates since with zero dish drama. So my hot take is that the fix for messy roommates is not a chore chart or a group chat, it's picking the one thing that actually starts the fights and making a clear rule about it. Am I crazy here, or has a single dumb rule saved anyone else's living situation?
