Spent 3 weeks trying to fix a prompt that was just missing one line of setup
I was workshopping a flash fiction prompt last month and every draft came out with the same problem, people kept writing the same bland suburban kitchen scene over and over. I tried adding constraints, cutting words, even rewriting the whole thing as a dialogue-only exercise, and nothing helped for almost three weeks. Turned out the fix was one line saying who the character was avoiding, which I only figured out after a guy in my writing group said "they don't know what to want." Has anyone else had a prompt fail for weeks and the answer was just a missing detail about motive?
