Tried writing a dad joke about my lawn mower and it bombed hard

Honestly, I spent $40 on a pun workshop book last month thinking it would give me killer material. I tried out a line about my mower's spark plug and my wife just stared at me for 10 seconds. The book had a joke about 'grass roots' that landed with a thud at the family barbecue. Has anyone else dropped cash on joke writing guides that just weren't worth it?
