Rolled a level 1 wizard with no damaging spells as a joke and he survived a beholder fight by casting Prestidigitation on its eye stalks

Turns out the dungeon master ruled that having your eyestalks suddenly smell like lavender and look cleaner was enough of a distraction to buy the rogue a full round to set up a backstab, and now I have to figure out how to keep this joke character alive for the next campaign arc without ruining the bit, has anyone else accidentally made a support-only build that became the party's MVP?

This whole thing sounds like a fun gimmick that's getting way overthought. You just roll with it until it stops working, that's the whole bit.

Yeah, I had a similar experience with this one local game that people just played by feel. It was supposed to be this deep RPG thing but we all just made up rules on the fly (mostly around whose turn it was to buy snacks) and it somehow worked way better than the actual system. The whole point is that if you're having fun you're doing it right, you know? Overthinking just kills the vibe.
