Backwards parts are the new normal at my diesel shop
Lately, I've seen a crazy number of trucks come in with aftermarket parts put on wrong. One dude had his intercooler pipes facing the wrong way, so his turbo was basically useless. He said he followed a guide from some forum but missed a key step. This happens so often now, it's like a weekly thing. I guess with all the info online, people feel brave but skip the details. It's kinda funny to see, but man, it wastes everyone's time. Just yesterday, a guy with a lifted diesel had his lift kit bolts loose because he didn't torque them right.

How do you even mess up intercooler pipes that bad? The turbo pushing hot air back into the engine instead of cooling it is wild. That's a good way to cook your motor and lose all your power. People just see a video and run with it without knowing why things go a certain way.

@anna165, that line about cooking your motor really hits home... I've watched friends blow engines from similar mistakes. It's a shame when people chase trends without knowing how things work.

Man, that reminds me of a guy at our local autocross who kept melting spark plug wires. He'd wrapped them right against the header for a "clean look" and wondered why his car kept missing under boost. Some folks just see a tidy engine bay in a magazine and copy it without asking why it's set up that way. They don't think about heat soak or how things actually work when everything gets hot.
