Can we talk about using a paint roller to apply mud for knockdown ceilings

I was struggling with the texture on a big living room job in Phoenix, so I tried a 3/4-inch nap roller to lay down the mud and it gave me way more control than a hawk and trowel for that specific finish.

Roller naps can actually change the whole pattern. A thicker nap holds more mud but releases it differently, so you get those longer, flatter knockdown tails. It's a cheat code for that southwest style everyone wants out here.

Ever try a different roller nap length to get a more defined knockdown pattern?
