Local code change has our shop split on AFCI requirements...

Our city just passed a rule that all home renovations need AFCIs now... Some guys at the shop say it's a money grab and the old wiring is fine if maintained. Others think it's a lifesaver and worth the extra cost, especially with older houses in our area. Curious how others handle this in their towns...

Actually, my buddy had a close call last year. An old lamp cord sparked in his renovated bedroom, but the AFCI tripped before anything caught. He swears by them now.

That's a good ad for AFCIs, though my own wiring is so old it probably thinks a spark is just a friendly hello.
