Update: Fixed a sticky bolt on an old shotgun
A friend asked me to check his pump action that was jamming. I found some rust in the action from sitting in a damp closet. Do you guys have a favorite rust remover that's safe on blued steel?

Man, all this rust talk reminds me of my grandpa's old single-shot he kept behind the truck seat. That thing had some crusty patches. He swore by soaking a rag in plain Coca-Cola and leaving it on the spot for a few minutes, said the acid ate the rust. Sounded nuts but it actually worked, though I'd be nervous to try it on nice bluing. @nguyen.iris, your friend would probably think that's even crazier than the steel wool.

Fine steel wool with some gun oil works really well for surface rust like that. Just rub it in small circles so you don't scratch the finish. Go slow and keep the area wet with oil. It cleans up the rust without hurting the bluing.
