I finally saw how much my cheap scale was messing up my pour-over

I got a new digital scale last month after years of eyeballing water. My first brew with it was way better than before. The old scale was off by grams, making my coffee weak or strong. Now I know precision is key. Do you weigh your coffee and water every time?

How many grams was your old scale off by? My first one drifted almost 5 grams over time.

Wonder if 5 grams even changes anything you're actually making.

Oh, it absolutely matters. I had a cookie recipe fail once because my old scale was off by about 4 grams on the baking soda, just like joseph_shah48 mentioned with drift. That tiny amount doubled the leavener. They tasted metallic and spread into one flat, weird sheet. For salt or spices in a small batch, 5 grams is the difference between seasoned and ruined. It's sneaky, but it'll wreck your results.
