Appreciation post: My makeshift polishing station is actually working

Used an old desk lamp and some foam. Buffing pieces is way smoother now.

You mentioned good lighting making it easier, but honestly I've found the opposite. A really bright desk lamp like that can wash out the fine details on a piece, making it harder to spot tiny scratches. Sometimes a softer, more diffused light works better because it doesn't create harsh reflections that blind you. I tried a direct light setup once and kept missing dull spots until I turned the main overhead light on instead.

Good lighting makes buffing much easier, from what I recall reading. Your improvised setup seems to have that covered.

Yeah, that bit about harsh light washing things out is so true. My buddy had the same issue trying to buff out some light scratches on his guitar. He switched to a lamp with a shade and said it was way easier to see what he was doing.
