Stop flipping antique couch cushions like it's 1995

I keep seeing posts on here where people find a cool old couch and immediately flip the cushions over to hide the worn side. That's a bad move if the couch is from before the 70s. Most vintage couches have a specific top side that matches the fabric grain and wear pattern on the arms. I learned this the hard way after I flipped a 1960s sectional I picked up for $40 in Portland. The fabric looked fine for two weeks, then started fraying at the seams because the underside material was never meant to hold weight. Now I always check the back of the cushion for a tag or a subtle fade line before deciding which side faces up. Has anyone else wrecked a good find by doing this too early?

My buddy found a killer mid-century sofa at a thrift store and flipped the cushions without checking... three months later the seams popped right open on both seats. He was so mad he almost threw the whole thing out.

Honestly, sounds like his real problem was just bad luck with the seams, not the flipping itself. Ive flipped plenty of thrifted furniture and never had seams blow out like that unless the fabric was already super worn. Mightve been cheap stitching from the start or maybe the cushions were just too heavy for the old thread. Ngl, a quick hand stitch on those seams wouldve saved the whole sofa instead of tossing it.
