Picked up whittling after watching a 10 minute YouTube video last month

I swear I just clicked on some random video about carving a wooden bird and now I own 3 knives and a block of basswood bigger than my head. Started with a simple spoon shape and ended up making a little fox statue that actually looks like a fox and not a lumpy potato. The trick I figured out is to keep your thumb out of the way when you're cutting towards yourself, learned that one the hard way with a bandaid. Anyone else jump into this and find a specific wood or knife brand that just clicks for beginners? I'm about to buy more supplies but don't want to waste cash on junk.

My buddy Matt got into whittling last winter and bought a cheap set of knives off Amazon that went dull after three projects. He finally shelled out for a single Flexcut and says it made carving way less frustrating.
