inJust realized our shop's old timer and the new hire have totally different takes on pouring speed
What about the mold material itself though? Laura211 is right about turbulence, but if you're using a different sand or coating, that changes everything. A faster pour into a really dry sand mold might be fine, but a slower pour is safer for a green sand mold that's more likely to erode. The "right" speed isn't just about the metal, it's about what you're pouring it into.

inJust realized my $20 automatic door opener from Tractor Supply is way more reliable than the $150 'smart' one I bought online
Flawlessly for two years" is the key part. Makes me wonder what happens when the company that makes the app shuts down or gets bought out. Your opener becomes a dumb brick.

inMy water heater went out on the coldest day last week
Did the plumber give you a breakdown of the cost, like how much was the new unit itself versus the labor? I'm always curious what the actual markup is on those emergency calls.

inWalked into a big office in Denver and saw their server room setup
That old core switch might be humming now, but it's a real risk. I saw a medical office with a similar setup, an old Cisco switch from 2012. It worked fine until a power surge took it out, and they couldn't get a replacement part. The whole office was down for two days waiting for new gear to ship. Old tech often misses critical security updates too, leaving the network open. Stability is good until the one failure you can't fix happens.
