Just read that a standard 2x4 hasn't been 2 inches by 4 inches since the 1960s

Yeah, that fact about the 2x4 is a classic piece of woodworking trivia. I heard it's because they plane the rough lumber down after it dries, so you start with a full 2x4 but end up with less. The actual size now is like one and a half by three and a half inches. It's one of those things that makes building anything a bit trickier if you don't know it going in.

I was picking up lumber when a guy mistook me for a store employee

You ever just pretend to look at your phone? I mean, if I'm not in the mood to talk I'll just act like I got a text and walk away.

A client in Austin told me my repair estimates were too vague and it changed my whole approach

That's a solid fix, going from a single number to a range. Reminds me of when my mechanic started itemizing "parts" and "shop time" on his sheet. Suddenly a big number felt less like a surprise and more like a choice, you know? It built way more trust than the old guesswork.

Barbers used to apprentice for years. Now some learn in months. I'm not sure what we lost in the process.

But does the haircut actually turn out worse? Idk, feels like maybe we're just romanticizing the past.

Seeing bookbinders in Vienna work with antique presses hit me hard.

Oh wow, I read this article about how the pressure from those old iron presses actually changes the leather's fibers over time. Makes total sense why the feel would be so different from modern stuff.
