Pro tip: I started adding a pinch of sugar to my tomato sauce three years ago after a dinner rush in Chicago. It cuts the acid without tasting sweet.

Oh for sure, jarred sauce is the best place to start. I always dump a jar of the basic marinara into a pan, fry up some garlic in olive oil first, then add the sauce. Let it simmer for like 20 minutes and toss in some fresh basil. It tastes totally different, way richer. Makes a huge difference.

Showerthought: Heard a kid at the parts counter call a slide hammer a 'dinosaur tool' and it got me thinking about all the old-school stuff we still rely on.

Is a shrinking disc really that outdated? It's just a piece of steel you spin. Seems like calling it dinosaur tech is a stretch for something that simple.

Showerthought: I put my sourdough in the fridge for a cold ferment and it came out flat as a pancake.

Cold kitchens are a real problem for dough. My place gets drafty and I had the same issue with loaves spreading out flat. Letting it sit out for a couple hours before the fridge made a huge difference for me. It builds enough strength to handle the cold slowdown. Now my schedule is about two hours room temp then into the fridge for no more than twelve. The bread keeps its shape much better that way.

My neighbor asked if I could 'laminate' his favorite paperback for durability

Totally get where fiona332 is coming from, but protecting a book the right way matters. Lamination seals in all the acids and moisture that will eat the paper from the inside. A proper stitch or rebinding gives it structure and lets it move, so it can actually handle being read again. It's the difference between putting a book in a plastic coffin and giving it a new spine so it can live a longer life.

Finally got a stubborn 90s Shimano freehub body to spin smoothly after a week of soaking in ATF

Honestly, that's a solid trick but I'd be careful calling ATF a solvent. Tbh it's more of a lubricant and cleaner. The reason it worked so well on that freehub is probably because it's so thin and slippery, it creeps into those tiny dried up bearings better than thick oil. I've used a mix of ATF and acetone for really stuck stuff, that's more of a true penetrant. Just ATF alone might not cut it for something truly rusted solid.
