Talking with an old farrier changed how I treat my anvil face

Hang onto that attitude and you'll see it everywhere once you start looking. My buddy's a woodworker who refuses to sand his workbench flat, just hammers down any high spots as they pop up. Same deal with an old carpenter I knew who never level-checked his framing square, he'd just tap it on the corner of the bench until it felt right. It's like the whole "let the tool tell you what it needs" thing versus "measure everything to the thousandth." Both work, but one way can make you a better feel for the metal or wood in the long run.

Found a stripped screw on a Cessna 172's cowling last month in Tucson

Heard somewhere you can also use a bit of super glue on the screwdriver tip for stripped screws. Let it dry and it gives you a solid grip too.

Had a bodyshop owner tell me I was overthinking my filler work

Man I gotta say, I think the climate thing is huge and nobody's really talking about it enough. @paulb98 mentioned waiting before sanding, but here's the thing - if you're in a dry place like Arizona, thick filler can actually skin over on top before the bottom cures right. My buddy in Tucson had a hood come back with a big crack down the middle six months later because he laid it on too thick in July. I'm not saying thin only, but maybe split the difference - put it on a little thicker than you normally would but don't go full 1/4 inch unless you're waiting a full day between coats.

Saw a competition pitmaster use a $20 Home Depot thermometer over his $400 Fireboard

...and honestly I've been there too but with a different kind of gear. Couple years back I bought one of those fancy charcoal starters that's supposed to light your coals in two minutes flat with this turbine fan built in. Cost me like 80 bucks and the thing caught fire on the third use. Now I just use a chimney starter and some newspaper. My neighbor still laughs about it every time I fire up the grill.

Had a guy at a craft fair tell me my bumper sticker font was ‘unreadable’

Yeah honestly I used to roll my eyes at font complaints but now I get where he was coming from.
