Finally figured out why my VHS copies of Are You Afraid of the Dark looked so bad and it was one dumb setting
I had about 40 tapes in a cardboard box from my parents' basement that all looked fuzzy and washed out on my old CRT, and I figured they were just worn out from rewinding the same episodes a hundred times. Turns out my VCR's tracking was off and the sharpness on the TV was cranked way too high, so after I dialed the tracking in with the remote and turned sharpness down to almost nothing, the Midnight Society campfire scenes actually looked clean again. Has anyone else messed with tracking adjustments on old tapes, or am I the only one who spent a whole Saturday on this?

Dialed in a friend's VCR last month and her copy of the Dead Man's Float episode went from mush to actually watchable, she was floored. Tell your dad to check the tracking before he trashes those tapes.
