A quick demo of AI voice cloning changed my mind completely

I thought AI voice cloning was just for creepy deepfakes until last week when a developer showed me how it can restore voices for people with ALS. He played a sample of a patient reading a bedtime story to their kid for the first time in 2 years. Has anyone else seen legit uses that aren't scary?

Wait, did they show the actual recording of the kid hearing their parent's voice for the first time? lol that must have been something. I saw a similar demo where the voice was cloned from old voicemails and home videos, which is insane because most people don't have professional recordings lying around. The developer said the tech only needs like 30 seconds of clear audio to work now, which is wild compared to what it used to require. It really makes you think about all the good stuff that's flying under the radar while we just hear about the scary deepfakes in the news.

Watched a demo where they gave a voice back to a stroke survivor. Made me tear up right there in the room.
