That $300 AI photo enhancer just made my grandma look like a plastic doll
Tried a paid AI upscaler on a scanned 1970s family photo from my mom's album in Fresno and it smoothed every wrinkle into mush, so has anyone found one that keeps real skin texture or should I just pay a local shop to rescan it?
Check what DPI your scan came in at first, because a lot of those upscalers just guess at detail that isn't there. A flatbed at 600 or 1200 DPI from the original print will beat any AI tool, and Fresno has a few camera shops that do it for like 5 to 10 bucks a photo. If you want to try software, Topaz Photo AI has a slider for keeping grain and texture, but turn it way down or it still goes plastic. Honestly for a 70s print, a good rescan plus maybe some light sharpening in free software will look way more like your grandma.
