Question about the $1200 Jasper reman I dropped in a 6.0 last fall

Did that Jasper rebuild save my shop hours or just burn my customer with a ticking time bomb because that thing already has a weird knock at 15k miles and I'm starting to wonder if those cheap in-frame kits from the parts house would have been smarter.

The free cactus I grabbed from a garage sale turned into a massive monster in 8 months

I picked up this tiny potted cactus from a table in someone's driveway for free last April. Thought it would just sit there and do nothing like my succulents usually do. But after 5 months of ignoring it on my porch, it shot up to like 18 inches tall and sprouted 3 arms. I had to repot it twice because the roots were trying to bust out the bottom. Has anyone else had a plant they neglected actually thrive like crazy?

Dropped $80 on a cheap EMF detector and it was total garbage

I got really into the whole paranormal conspiracy scene after watching some documentaries about hidden government experiments. So last month I bought this basic EMF detector off Amazon for about $80, thinking I could test for weird signals near power lines and stuff. Turned out the thing just went off constantly near any electrical outlet or even my phone. I took it out to an old abandoned factory everyone says is haunted, and it just buzzed nonstop from the wiring in the walls. Total waste of money honestly, it didn't prove anything or catch anything unusual. I should have saved up for a better model or just borrowed a smart meter app instead. Has anyone else bought a cheap gadget for investigating and gotten burned like me?

Bird tape didn't work for me, but a cheap window film trick finally did the trick

I kept finding little dazed birds on my patio every morning (especially cardinals, they seemed really drawn to one specific pane). Everyone online swears by those feather silhouette decals, so I tried them for 2 weeks and zero change, I was so frustrated. I ended up grabbing a roll of frosted privacy window film from Home Depot for like 8 bucks and covered the bottom 3 feet of that window. It's been 6 weeks now and not a single tap, plus it still lets in light. Has anyone else had better luck with a solid surface cover than with the stickers?

Warning: booking a flight with a layover in Miami taught me a lesson

I booked a $180 flight to Colombia through Miami thinking I'd save cash. But I didn't check when the layover was and ended up stuck there for 8 hours overnight. Everything in the terminal closed by 10 PM and I sat on the floor by a charging station. Now I always check layover times before I click buy. Anyone else get burned by a cheap flight with a long layover?

Warning: I think the Barrett-Jackson auction floor is overrated for real car guys

I went to the Scottsdale show last month and everyone was glued to the stage watching cars go for 6 figures, but the real stuff was in the vendor tents out back where guys were actually swapping parts and telling stories. Am I the only one who thinks the main auction kills the whole grassroots vibe?

My flock tried a new treat at a local farm stand and it was a total hit

I stopped by Miller's Farm Stand last Saturday on a whim and grabbed a bag of dried mealworms on a gamble. My girls usually ignore store bought treats but they went absolutely crazy for these things, like it was chicken Christmas morning. I sprinkled a handful in their run and they cleared it in under two minutes flat. Has anyone else had luck with dried mealworms versus the live ones?

Swapped to vertical monitor for coding and it fixed my neck pain

For 2 years I had my two monitors side by side and kept turning my head left to read long lines of code. Last week I rotated one monitor to portrait mode and now I can see 80 lines at once without moving my head. Has anyone else tried a vertical setup for reading docs or spreadsheets?

Tried using binoculars instead of my telescope for a night and saw way more detail

I have a 6 inch Dobsonian that I love, but last Tuesday it was cloudy and I just grabbed my old 10x50 binoculars to sit on the porch. I ended up spotting the Pleiades cluster with such clear separation of stars that I could count at least 7 of them. My telescope usually shows them too bright and washed out for me to pick out individual ones. I learned that sometimes simpler gear works better when you just want a wide view of the sky. Has anyone else had a night where their backup tool outperformed their main one?

Rant: I used to hate when book clubs forced a vote on the next read

I was at Linda's place last Tuesday, and she put the whole group on the spot to pick between two historical novels right then and there. I got annoyed because three people hadn't even finished the current book yet, so how could they vote? Then Mary said "it's not about finishing, it's about what excites you to start" and that honestly snapped me out of my irritation. We picked one, and the energy in the room shifted way better than when we spend 20 minutes deliberating. Has anyone else changed their mind about voting on the fly like that?

The debate on fluid preheating for better fog output

Yeah I went through the same thing last winter. @brooke484 I actually found a middle ground that worked better than the full water bath thing. Instead of preheating that hot, I just warmed my fluid to room temp by keeping the bottle near a radiator for a few hours before filling the tank. Got noticeably thicker fog without the crazy residue buildup. Also switched to a different fluid brand that runs cleaner overall. So maybe tweak the temp down a bit before giving up on preheating entirely.

Last week I finally tamed the rat's nest behind my TV stand

my wife walked in and said whoa what happened in here" lol ok but honestly why does it even matter? all that work and in a month you'll have dust bunnies and a new cable from some gadget you just bought. i used to do the same thing with my setup, clean it up real nice and then i realize i barely see behind the tv anyway. its not like im hosting a cable viewing party. plus those velcro strips leave sticky residue after a while and then you gotta scrub that mess. feels like wasted effort when the wires still do their job tangled or not.
