The lead on the Dallas hangar line told me to stop chasing torque specs by feel alone
About 12 years back I was pulling a cylinder on a Continental and the lead walked over and said flat out, "you're guessing, and guessing gets paperwork." I had been wrenching for a while and figured my wrist knew 50 foot pounds, but he made me drag out the calibrated wrench and I was off by 8 pounds on the first nut. That stung. These days I won't touch a critical fastener without the book open and the wrench set, even on the small stuff I've done a hundred times. Funny thing is, the old timers on the line back then mostly worked by feel because the torque wrenches were junk, and now we got digital ones that beep at you. I still keep his words in my head every annual. How many of you got a lead who called you out like that, and did it stick or did you blow it off?
