Unpopular opinion: the 3,000 hour TBO on the old Lycomings was more honest than today's 2,000
A retired A&P in Wichita showed me his logbooks from the 70s and those engines routinely made 3,000 hours because shops actually pulled cylinders and looked at them instead of trusting the book. Are we babying these new engines or just scared of the paperwork?
3,000 hours? That is wild. My club's O-320 gets pulled at 2,000 like clockwork and everyone acts like it's gospel. The idea of a shop yanking jugs every few hundred hours and actually measuring the bores instead of watching the clock is nuts to me. Insurance and the front desk crowd would lose their minds if we tried that now.
