Appreciation post: the guy who trained me in Council Bluffs said label every wire, and 2 years later I'm still fighting about it
When I got hired at a small shop in Council Bluffs, Iowa about 2 years back, the lead installer there trained me for 6 weeks and drilled one rule into my head: label both ends of every single wire, no exceptions, even the short runs. I thought it was a waste of time back then because it added maybe 20 minutes to each panel job and the boss never said a word about it. Fast forward to last Tuesday, I got sent to finish a panel swap some other crew started and abandoned, 14 zones, zero labels, wires just hanging there like spaghetti. I spent almost 3 hours with a toner just figuring out which pair went where, and I charged the customer for none of it because that felt wrong. Here is my problem though, the other camp says labels are pointless on new construction since the wire runs are obvious when you're the one who pulled them. And honestly, on a clean install they have a point, I can trace my own work in my sleep. But the second somebody else touches it, or you come back 6 months later for a trouble call, unlabeled wire turns a 15 minute fix into a whole afternoon. So where do you all land, do you label everything no matter what, or only the messy runs?
