I paid $900 for a heat pump inspection and it saved me from a $12k disaster
Everyone on here says to just skip the fancy inspections and DIY everything, but I had a guy come out to check my heat pump in Calgary before winter hit. He found a cracked coil that was leaking refrigerant slowly, something I never would have caught until the whole system fried in January. The $900 inspection felt like a ripoff at first, but fixing the coil cost $2,800 versus replacing the entire unit for around $12k. My neighbor laughed at me for spending that kind of money on a checkup, then his unit died mid freeze last month. Anyone else had a major system failure that could've been caught early, or is this just luck on my part?

The whole cheap now, expensive later thing runs through everything, not just home stuff. People skip oil changes, dentist cleanings, even just rotating tires, then act shocked when the bill comes back five times bigger.
