PSA: dropped $1,800 on a basement suite reno permit in Edmonton that I didn't even need
Back in 2019 I wanted to rent out my basement in Mill Woods and a contractor talked me into pulling a full development permit first. Turns out for a legal secondary suite here you often need the permit plus a separate fire inspection, and I paid around $1,800 total between fees and drawings before the city told me my ceiling height was 3 inches too low to pass anyway. That money is just gone and the suite sat empty for another year until I fixed the framing right. Anyone else get burned by a contractor pushing permits before checking if the place actually qualified?
