I stopped by the new library branch on Maple Street yesterday to check it out. They have a dedicated tech help desk where volunteers help people with basic computer problems for free. I watched for about 20 minutes and saw them helping an older lady reset her email password and showing a kid how to use a word processor. Everyone online seems to think this is a great community service, but I disagree. These volunteers, while well-meaning, are giving out tech advice with no real accountability. What if they give bad advice that leads to a data loss or a security issue? The library isn't liable, and the person getting help has no comeback. It undercuts local techs who do this for a living and have insurance and proper training. Has anyone else seen a setup like this in their town and thought it was a problem?

A fire at the Kansas City Royal last year made me rethink my whole smoker setup.

Saw a guy's pellet grill flare up and nearly torch his tent. Grease fire got out of hand fast. He was using a cheap drip pan that bent and spilled. Now I always bring a metal bucket for ash and a fire blanket. Anyone else change their gear after seeing something go wrong at a cook-off?

My kiln shelf cracked right in the middle of a big piece

I was finishing a 14 inch vase at the studio in Asheville last Thursday when I heard a loud pop from the annealer. Opened it up and found a 3 inch crack right across the middle of my kiln shelf, with the piece still sitting on it. I had to slowly heat the whole shelf back up to 900 degrees over an hour to safely remove the vase without it shocking. Has anyone else had a shelf fail like that, and what brand do you trust now?
